Alison’s Brisbane MBSR course was featured in the award-winning documentary. The Silent Epidemic

You’ll find MBSR rewarding, enjoyable and at times even challenging as you learn practical, accessible ways to bring mindfulness and self-compassion into everyday life. The Brisbane MBSR course involves attending 8 Monday evening sessions (2 1/2 hours) and a full day of mindfulness on a Saturday later in the course (27 hours of guided support).

MBSR is facilitated by Alison Keane. Alison is one of a small number of Australian mindfulness teachers accredited with the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare and Society (CFM) in the USA. The CFM is involved in setting up global teaching standards. The Brisbane course was featured in the recent internationally-distributed and award winning SBS television documentary, The Silent Epidemic.

Alison’s Keane speaking with 4BC’s Sally Chester Law about the benefits of doing mindfulness courses like MBSR

More than three decades of published research reports that people who participate and complete 8 weeks of mindfulness within MBSR show benefits including:

  • an increased ability to relax
  • an improved ability to cope with pain that may not go away
  • greater energy and enthusiasm for life
  • improved self-esteem
  • the ability to cope more effectively with stress in both the short and long term

MBSR has been brilliant. I feel great! I now have the tools to deal with stress when it arises. I’m so proud of myself for doing it, and I believe that mindfulness has, and will continue to change my life – Sarah, Brisbane

I came to MBSR seeking a quick fix and have come away realising that mindfulness is a life journey….I now have the skills to start that journey – Annette, QLD

What happens in an MBSR course?

Throughout MBSR you will be consciously and systematically working with your own stress, pain and illness – and the challenges and demands of your everyday life.

Your teacher will create a safe and supportive environment for this work

Do you need to have experience in meditation or be good at yoga?

No, it doesn’t matter if you have never tried meditation. One of the foundations of mindfulness is having a ‘beginner’s mind’. That is, coming to each practice as if it was your first! There is some gentle mindful movement in MBSR. This includes learning to walk mindfully. Instruction is given thoughtfully and carefully to ensure everyone is safe and getting the most out of the experience.

Is there any support once I have completed an MBSR course?

The 8-week MBSR course provides the tools to begin your mindfulness journey.

However you might also like some on-going support to help you keep things going. As an MBSR ‘graduate’ you will be able to arrange private one on one meetings with a mindfulness coach who will give you encouragement, information and support about your unique mindfulness life journey.

Or, you might like to join one of our online MBSR on-going learning and support forums.

Living a mindful life, and the discoveries and awakening that come with this are further enriched by attending the regular MBSR Full Days or even doing the MBSR course again at some stage.Once you have completed an MBSR course you are welcome to register again at a special ‘Past Participant Refresher’ price.
